Streeter, Edward. Father of the Bride. First Edition. 1949. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows minor fraying, particularly to the spine ends. Illustrated by Gluyas Williams.
As this comedic novel makes clear, the bride’s father does not only gain a son-in-law, he loses most of the money he had stashed away for retirement. The book follows Stanley Banks as he negotiates his way through the process, first attempting to convince his daughter to elope and later scheming to invite far-away guests that will not be able to make it to the ceremony. This was the basis for the 1950 Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, Elizabeth Taylor film, which itself was the basis for the Steve Martin, Diane Keaton remake. Includes frequent cartoon-style illustrations.
“A Bride’s Book is, to a prospective bride, what a score card is to a baseball fan. The statistics are as important as the game itself.”
--Edward Streeter
